MOUNT VERNON, ILL. - A funeral for Elsie May Norton, 81, of Midway, formerly of Bull Shoals and Woodlawn, Ill., will be 10 am Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon with Les Boldt officiating. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Norton died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Brighton Gardens of Carlsbad, Calif.

She was born July 31, 1926, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., to Edward Samuel Mann and Anna Lucille (Mace) Mann.

She married Lester Laverne Norton June 17, 1943, in Joliet, Ill., and he preceded her in death Aug. 16, 1996.

Upon retirement, Elsie and her husband managed Norton's All Season Resort in Bull Shoals. In the late 1970s, Elsie was instrumental in organizing dance marathons at Woodlawn High School to raise money to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Elsie was a volunteer at Bull Shoals Lake-White River Chamber of Commerce, Colorama Fall Festival chairman in Bull Shoals for many years, Bull Shoals Arts and Humanities Council officer, Scenic 178 Communities Inc. charter member, Bull Shoals Friends of the Library member, co-founder of Operation Locate in Bull Shoals and a former member of Board of Realtors and Remocwen Club in Mount Vernon.

She is survived by six children,
Stephen Norton and wife, Beverley, of Oceanside, Calif.,
Richard Norton and wife, Sandra, of Homewood, Ill.,
Sue Norton of Sun City, Ariz.,
Becky Clinton and husband, Kevin, of Woodlawn,
Peggy Hall and husband Michael, of Nason, Ill., and
Neil Norton and wife, Caroline, of Midway;

20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, John Edward Norton; one great-grandson, Shawn Norton; a brother, Joseph Maurice "Jack" Mann; and a sister, Audrey Klyczek.

Memorials may be give to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home ore mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mount Vernon, IL. 62864.
